Can someone show me the way home?

I keep seeing these posts for these techno parties and all these people with short hair and shaved heads who follow them out to these three day techno parties. They're all over and seemingly happening every weekend.

Ok, maybe I'm a little old fashioned but I still love indie folk music, psychedelic rock, jazz, bluegrass, and even raggae when the time is right. I love being out in nature, veganism, the peace movement, ecology, natural clothing, and hot bearded hippies that look like Jesus. What happened to all of that stuff?

I don't really like to subscribe to labels because I definitely don't fall in to the category that defines hippies as emaciated dreamers but I DO want to change the world and I love artists who channel their poetry into song. I used to think that my hippie parents had bad tastes and were really weird, but now I get it.

Of course Phish, Morison, Dylan and all the others that preceded us were great but their time has already passed or they're quick on their way to an end. These new kids are REALLY GOOD too. And, when did everyone stop listening to rock and folk and start listening to House and Techno anyway? No offense but....Yuck!!! WTF?!

Doesn't anyone care about social change any more? Sure protests don't hold much credibility anymore but what about being living examples of the peace movement, supporting a sustainable energy system through educating others, abstaining from eating meat? I know there are events that support these things but they seem to be very few and far between. I feel like I'm the only one left! Am I all alone out here? Maybe I'm just out of place! CAN SOMEONE PLEASE SHOW ME THE WAY HOME? WHERE ARE MY PEOPLE?

Since there are no time machines that will ship me back to '69 can someone tell me where I belong? I obviously (and surprisingly) do NOT fit in here.

Could the Family Use a New Member?

I'm dying over here in Venice, CA. The only real hippies to speak of here are really old and folks my age don't seem to hold the same values as I do; living a healthy, ecofriendly life, listening to music that depicts my beliefs, traveling, etc. I see a few of you, but you're all scattered and transitory like fleeting butterflys. Hey, I can't spread the wisdom of love and light all alone and unfortunately the Sunday drum circle doesn't hold any real weight here. I'm stuck here until mid December for school (Environmental Studies/ Parks and Recs major) and then I plan on hitting the road and maybe permanently relocating to Oregon. If any of you are here in Venice beach I'd love for you to come meet up with me. I also want to come to some of the upcoming events as I LOVE the outdoors and the natural environment. Definitely want to join others who may be traveling in December. So, what I mean to say is I need a family of loving, enviro friendly, vegan/vegi/organic, earthy types like myself who won't compromise their true beliefs for anyone. What do you think, can I join you? *smiles*

They are the last survivors: all that's left of a once-vibrant civilisation which created its own religion and language, and gave special names to everything from the creatures of the rainforest to the stars of the night sky.

Just five people represent the entire remaining population of the Akuntsu, an ancient Amazonian tribe which a generation ago boasted several hundred members, but has been destroyed by a tragic mixture of hostility and neglect.

The indigenous community, which spent thousands of years in uncontacted seclusion, recently took an unwelcome step closer to extinction, with the death of its sixth last member, an elderly woman called Ururú.

Considered the matriarch of the Akuntsu, and shown in these pictures (which were taken in 2006, and are the most recent images of the tribe), Ururú died of old age, in a hut built from straw and leaves, on 1 October. News of her death emerged last week, when the tribe was visited by human rights campaigners, who have spent the past decade campaigning to preserve their homeland from deforestation.

"I followed the funeral," says Altair Algayer, a local representative of Funai, the Brazilian government agency which protects Indian territories. "She died in a small house. We heard weeping and rushed over, but she had already died." Ururú's death means the entire population of the Akuntsu now consists of just three women and two men. All of them are either close family relations, or no longer of child-bearing age – meaning that the tribe's eventual disappearance is now inevitable.

The slow death of this indigenous community is far more than an unfortunate accident, however. Instead, it represents the long-planned realisation of one of the most successful acts of genocide in human history. And the fate of the Akuntsu is seen by lobby groups as an object lesson in the physical and cultural dangers faced by undiscovered tribes at so-called "first contact".

Much of the Akuntsus' story is – for obvious reasons – undocumented. For millennia, they lived in obscurity, deep in the rainforest of Rondonia state, a remote region of western Brazil near the Bolivian border. They hunted wild pig, agoutis and tapir, and had small gardens in their villages, where they would grow manioc (or cassava) and corn.

Then, in the 1980s, their death warrant was effectively signed: farmers and loggers were invited to begin exploring the region, cutting roads deep into the forest, and turning the once verdant wilderness into lucrative soya fields and cattle ranches.

Fiercely industrious, the new migrant workers knew that one thing might prevent them from creating profitable homesteads from the rainforest: the discovery of uncontacted tribes, whose land is protected from development under the Brazilian constitution.

As a result, frontiersmen who first came across the Akuntsu in the mid-1980s made a simple calculation. The only way to prevent the government finding out about this indigenous community was to wipe them off the map.

At some point, believed to be around 1990, scores of Akuntsu were massacred at a site roughly five hours' drive from the town of Vilhena. Only seven members of the tribe escaped, retreating deeper into the wilderness to survive.

Those seven were not formally "contacted" until 1995, when Funai investigators finally made it to the region and were able to have a 26,000-hectare area of forest protected for them. They included the late Ururú, who was the sister of the tribe's chief and shaman, Konibú.

"We know little of what Ururú's life was like," says Mr Algayer, who was among the Funai team that first discovered the tribe. "In the 14 years that we have been with her, she was a happy, spontaneous person ... She recounts that she had four children who were all shot dead during the massacre. We don't know who her husband was or how he died."

One other member of the group of seven, known as Babakyhp, was killed in a freak accident in 2000, when a tree blew over in a storm and landed on her hut. The others, who still survive, are Pugapía, Konibú's wife, who is roughly 50 years old, their daughters, Nãnoi and Enotéi, who are around 35 and 25 respectively, and a cousin, Pupak, who is in her forties.

Evidence of their suffering is visible in bullet wounds which both Konibú and Pupak showed to cameramen making a documentary about their struggle – Corumbiara: they shoot Indians, don't they? – that was filmed over the last 20 years and has just been released in Brazil.

It is also evident in a simple fact: on its own, the Akuntsu gene pool cannot allow it to survive another generation. Since tribal custom will apparently not allow outsiders to marry in, it is therefore effectively doomed.

The Akuntsu story is not unique. Even if they escape persecution, communities that have never encountered the outside world often face tragedy. Typically they lose between 50 and 80 per cent of their population in a matter of months, since they have no immunity to common diseases.

Ancient ways of life are also frequently corrupted by the arrival of outsiders. Though indigenous tribes rarely have much interest in material possessions, and often don't understand the concept of money, their traditional clothes and rituals are vulnerable to change.

Campaigners now hope the fate of the tribe, which will be publicly highlighted by Ururú's death, will persuade the Brazilian people to further strengthen government protections for indigenous people.

Stephen Corry of Survival International, a human rights organisation that has been working with Funai, said: "The "Akuntsu are at the end of the road. In a few decades this once vibrant and self-sufficient people will cease to exist and the world will have lost yet another piece of our astonishing human diversity.

"Their genocide is a terrible reminder that in the 21st century there are still uncontacted tribes in several continents who face annihilation as their lands are invaded, plundered and stolen. Yet this situation can be reversed if governments uphold their land rights in accordance with international law.

"Public opinion is crucial – the more people speak up for tribal rights, the greater the chance that tribes like the Akuntsu will in future survive."

Rainbow and Patriarchy

Your thoughts and experiences? Is the rainbow family patriarchal?
It's been my experience that rainbow fosters a culture of (albeit loose) gender roles where women are healers and men are warriors. There's even a well known chant that says "we honor you we empower you to be who you are" and then goes on to reinforce those gender roles. As a man I've been told quite a few times by several different individuals that "its our job to protect the mommas." What does this say about rainbow? Are "the mommas" incapable of taking care of themselves (and if so, why?), or are we creating a culture of sexism by spreading these type of thoughts among rainbow men?

I'd also like to ask about homophobia. Of course we all know that everyone has a belly button and all family is welcome and I never seen any blatant examples of homophobic activities at a gathering. It's been my perception, however, that most folks prefer fairy camp to stay at fairy camp. I sense an unspoken distrust among people who will visit every other camp in the woods and avoid fairy. Its something I've been guilty of in the past, but I'd like to work on. Has anyone else noticed this or am I way off track there?

I'm not attempting to be accusatory and point a finger at any person or group of people. This thread is not meant to be an arena for throwing stones. I'd simply like to hear other people's opinions on the matter. I'd like to know if there are things that we can do as a movement to eliminate patriarchy from rainbow culture. As a straight male I understand that I have a limited perspective of this issue and so I would really like to hear from my female, trans, and queer family.

Legalize Hemp and Cannabis in California

Right now there are two competing signature drives to put cannabis legalization initiatives on the ballot in California for November 2010.

One is found at www.taxcannabis2010.org

The other is found at www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org

Please look carefully at the text of both laws (the text of each is finalized at this point) and make up your own mind which one you support.

I am supporting www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org because this law will protect cannabis users from discrimination in healthcare, employment, and housing. It is a full legalization measure for hemp and cannabis which will restore full human rights to cannabis users and growers all across California.

I have two parts to my plan. The first part is to publicly post and distribute our "Call to Arms" in order to recruit volunteers. This document is available here-

The second part of the plan is to ask everyone who volunteers to make a pledge for how many signature they will collect in the next 30 days or so. 15-30 signatures is a good number. You can probably get that number from your family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors without having to solicit in public too much. This is an "out of the closet" movement. We will have to proudly advocate human rights for cannabis smokers in order to get support from legitimate people. I can supply stickers equivalent to each persons pledge number. These stickers can be used to generate interest and be given to people who sign the petition. Here is the sticker design-

We have 146 days in order to get the number of signatures that we need. Our petition is hot off the press yesterday September 11th and we are ready to begin collecting signatures this morning September 12th.

We are polling 56% public support for cannabis legalization in California, so this is an initiative which is not doomed. It's time has finally arrived. Now is the time to do this and to do it right. We may only get one chance. If a law which is not exactly what we want is implemented then we may lose our critical mass and our ability to set it right.

Where Does Everyone Go

After the Gathering? I can't find a way to live in this society like this anymore. I can't find a decent job with my ideas on the world. IF I have long hair i get turned down for jobs. I don't understand. I have wandered the country before and it has gotten me nowhere.

I'm just wondering how everyone survives? I'm a very confused person. And probably won't get the answer I'm looking for. Of course. I'm just a confused individual who does not know his place in the world. Always unhappy with what he has. I just don't want to conform I don't want to live like everyone else. I want to be free from daily remedial jobs I want to be around people I care about, but I have never found that. Sorry. I'm just venting.

Bring drinking water and/or personal filtering gear if you can, tents or shelter, camping equipment, sleeping bags, blankets, mats, flashlights and extra batteries, camp shovel, camp tools, rope, snacks. Bring green energy for the magic hat and some bulk food for the kitchens. Bring stuff to share. Prepare for warm days and cool nights. Bring rain gear, layered clothing, hiking footwear, sunglasses, sunscreen & a hat. Bring toiletry supplies including extra toilet paper, menstrual necessities, biodegradable soaps & shampoos, first aid supplies. Bring acoustic instruments, drums. Please bring bags to take out your trash & recyclables. Please remove any trash or recyclables from the gathering site any chance you may get. Cleanup starts when you get there!

You can go on either I-91 or I-93. Unless you are already in Boston, and I-93 is the only way out, think about I-91 even if it looks a bit longer, because I-495 and I-93 near Boston can turn into a traffic jam that takes hours to get through.

From I-93: Take Exit 32 in North Woodstock and go west on 112. Pass the Lost River and Wildwood Campground. Go about a mile further and turn left into Tunnel Brook Road (11.2 miles from I-93 exit).

From I-91: Take Exit 17 in Four Corners and go east on 302. Cross into New Hampshire and go through Woodsville. Continue on 302 for about five miles and turn right on 112. Follow this until it joins 116. In about a mile, 116 leaves again on the left. Continue on 112 for 0.3 miles and turn right into Tunnel Brook Road.

Drive along Tunnel Brook Road about a mile or until you feel like stopping the car. Then stop the car. Then stop following directions. Welcome Home.

I got an email this morning then i saw this on myspace. I hung out with this guy. He's DAMN good liar and he's been at it for a while. I don't normally support this type of post, but this guy is still at it. Most recently, he's suspected of having stolen money from Felipe (Kid Village), a laptop from Lynne, and 800 of CALM money.

It is likely that this guy is not only someone with the bad-habits of ripping and posing... BUT, he also may very well be an AGITATOR OR TROUBLEMAKER OR INFORMER... paid by the FEDERALS, etc...

Has also used the names Jason Hammel, John West and Rew or Andrew Stines. He looks a little different every time he shows up at a campaign but always volunteers to do security or communications shifts. He is branching out to many more different campaigns and events than just EF! or Rainbow.

Fall 1997
Posed as a medic at the Headwaters base camp in Stafford, CA. Gave out one prescription medication for any malady. Two tents full of donated camping and climbing gear disappeared just before he did.

Summer 1998
Spent time in activists' houses in Missoula, MT. Carefully watched videos at the Cold Mountain, Cold Rivers office. Dropped names, carried cell phone, made many claims of fame, gave details of events that took place a direct action at Headwaters to gain trust with one activist who later loaned him her 4X4 truck for "wood gathering" at Buffalo Nations in West Yellowstone, MT. Told the campaign that the truck was for sale and that he was going to be buying it. Claimed to be a "big dope grower" from Alderpoint, CA, and to be on a hot shot fire crew. "Volunteered" at Buffalo Nations (now Buffalo Field Campaign), flashed a (stolen?) park service badge, spread rumors of mushroom cultivation which got him kicked out, but not before he stole a wallet and credit cards from another volunteer and ordered hundreds of dollars of compute r software. It was rumored he was driving to Helena a lot to screw a girl who looked to be 14 years old. The truck was returned once the activist filed a police report stating the truck stolen and an all-points bulletin issued in 4 states. He deserted the vehicle in a field, with Bob Marley & Grateful Dead tape, Burger King trash, gas can & lantern in it. He stole an antique knife-axe from the truck.

Fall 1998
"Volunteered" at Black Mesa and Shundahai Network. Stole several hundred dollars of petty cash. Showed a wallet with a military ID. Activists later attempted a search but "access" was "denied".

Fall-Winter 1998
Used Buffalo Nations business card he'd printed up to gain entry into the Minnehaha Free State in Minneapolis, MN. Claimed to be from Arcata, CA. Was deemed untrustworthy and coincidently the activists picked up strong police radio signals when he was in camp. He was asked to leave, he asked if he could get "his axe" first. When he was taken to the bus station, he used the phone and later some eyewitnesses saw him picked up by two men in suits in a black car with tinted windows.

Fall 1999
Elaho Valley, BC Canada. Infiltrated the campaign to stop logging in the Elaho Vally. Became involved with the road blockades for several weeks. Gained trust of activists who asked him to caretake their house. He was gone upon their return along with many of their belongings. He possibly stole a white van as well.

July 2000
Worked at CALM (the first aid station) at the national Rainbow Gathering in Montana. Used the names "Turquoise" and "Sun Ray". Dropped names to gain trust, and claimed to be a "Wilderness Paramedic" (there is no such title). Claimed to have a van full of "Earth First!s radio equipment, satellite phone, and climbing gear. The van is rumored to have been stolen in Canada. Disappeared for 24 hours. Exhibited minor first aid skills but called for a helicopter evacuation for a fellow who'd smashed his knuckles punching a tree. Came out of "nowhere" when folks were setting up the radio repeater for the communication system at the gathering. Smoked huge quantities of cannabis daily. Hit on underage women. Gave a false e-mail address: fletcher97@earthlink/enviro.org. Dug a huge pit in a wetland and put medical waste in it. Skipped out with 4 of the radios:
1- Kenwood 78
1- Linco 580T
1- F-T 50
1- F-T 51R both worth $500 each.
Also missing are a Yaesu FT51R battery pack, a Motorola FRS radio, and one Pryme PR 460 GMRS radio.
July 2000
From Helena, MT he traveled to a Hempfest in Harrisburg, Lynn County, Oregon with Lynn Hargrave and Laura Thompson. Involved with Lynn in a relationship since the Rainbow gathering. Stole Laura's '98 VW Jetta, CA plates on July 14, 2000 with all of her belongings. Report is filed with "corp. Yon" 7-17-00 at the Police Dept. at Lynn County. (541-967-3911)

July 2000
Springerville, AZ, visited with Alex Pierce whom he'd met at the gathering. Hung around Alex's tattoo shop for a week, recieved a "Steal Your Face" tattoo on his right upper arm just below t-shirt line. (Steal Your Face is a red white and blue skull/thunderbolt graphic from the Grateful Dead). Made a concoction of herbs in the kitchen that were supposed to be "hallucinogenic" but made Alex violently ill and unable to get out of bed the next morning. He stole keys to the tattoo shop and stole $3900 worth of camera equipment.

August 2000
Appeared at the convergence space prior to the protests at the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, showed security a backpack full of radio and camera equipment. His photo had already been circulated through the security crews so he was immediately asked to leave. He supposedly went to the Anarchist Convention instead. At the Rage Against the Machine concert he set up a pup tent near the stage and was doing "first aid". An activist observed him wrap gauze on a compound fracture of the forearm.

August-September 2000
Tried to infiltrate Santa Cruz Earth First! at the Western Regio n al Rendezvous using the name "David". Tried to get someone to "hook him up with two ounces" , a felony even in California, at an event that had a posted No Drugs policy. Bragged about having lots of very expensive radio equipment and claimed to be a reporter for High Times. Asked too many odd questions and was booted, also the activists had seen his photo and knew him to be an unwanted thief.

Establish and practice good security culture. All communities should have a plan for how to deal with infiltraitors/disruptors. If you have contact with this person or if he shows up at your campaign with the stolen radio gear, encourage him to produce the stuff "on loan." If it's the stolen gear, reclaim it. You can do a citizen's arrest but call the cops. All campaigns should be warned of his method of operation as there are others like him who have or will use similar methods. "Glass" has poisoned someone; he is dangerous; DO NOT LEAVE HIM ALONE.

we both knew what it meant. it was something deeper than the superficial day to day encounters...and yet we both were and are wise enough...to see the bars everywhere, to see the cruel signs all saying NO. to feel the spikes pointing at our eyes...

in this world of Evil Insanity we didn't FALL in love, and that's something...to liv and feel love and NOT FALL...fall into the same self-destructive spirals of pointlessness that the WORLD convinces so many...

...until people forget why they were living, what it was for...

i know she loved what i love and still loves it, and yet...

it was the meetings on the street, it was the meetings outside of w*rk that made it glow...at least once seeing her with her other acquaintances as drunk as i have ever seen her.

the opposite of obsessively posessive, yet we see each other and i see her drunk on the mall having less than a blast, and her eyes meet mine.

all of a sudden the whole rest of the world, the lights get a little dimmer.

and months pass and i put her "out of my mind" where so MANY things are and i see her AGAIN...dressed in uniform, almost...

her smile just for me. her eyes ROLLING as if to say look at what i am stuck with and just you wait

Many of you might have seen the ShantiSena Alert going around
concerning "Doobie/Turquiose". It has been sent in emails, posted on
MySpace, Facebook and Tribe. I woke up this morning to check
responses since I know the thief in question - many of us at the
Annual this year do. To my dismay, the warning with a break down of
this guys activities in the past was "moderated" No PM to let me kno
why, just gone.

And furthermore, any post even MENTIONING KZ or linking to one of her
sites is "moderated." I say it's bs and family we can stop it. Isn't
it Benji that is in control over there? I know a few ppl who have his
phone # and I request that any other that do and care if we can speak
freely on a rainbow themed site give him a ring. I would like to see
this resolved "in a good way," but the moderators ignore my PMs asking
for a little explanation.

How COINTELPRO Helped Destroy
the Movements of the 1960s
Since COINTELPRO was used mainly against the progressive movements of the 1960s, its impact can be grasped only in the context of the momentous social upheaval which shook the country during those years.

All across the United States, Black communities came alive with renewed political struggle. Most major cities experienced sustained, disciplined Black protest and massive ghetto uprisings. Black activists galvanized multi-racial rebellion among GIs, welfare mothers, students, and prisoners.

College campuses and high schools erupted in militant protest against the Vietnam War. A predominantly white New Left, inspired by the Black movement, fought for an end to U.S. intervention abroad and a more humane and cooperative way of life at home. By the late 1960s, deep-rooted resistance had revived among Chicanos, Puerto Ricans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans. A second wave of broad-based strugglefor women's liberation had also emerged, along with significant efforts by lesbians, gay men, and disabled people.

Millions of people in the United States began to reject the dominant ideology and culture. Thousands challenged basic U.S. political and economic institutions. For a brief moment, "the crucial mixture of people's confidence in the government and lack of confidence in themselves which allows the government to govern, the ruling class to rule...threatened to break down."

By the mid-1970s, this upheaval had largely subsided. Important progressive activity persisted, mainly on a local level, and much continued to be learned and won, but the massive, militant Black and New Left movements were gone. The sense of infinite possibility and of our collective power to shape the future had been lost. Progressive momentum dissipated. Radicals found themselves on the defensive as right-wing extremists gained major government positions and defined the contours of accepted political debate.

Many factors besides COINTELPRO contributed to this change. Important progress was made toward achieving movement goals such as Black civil rights, an end to the Vietnam War, and university reform. The mass media, owned by big business and cowed by government and right-wing attack, helped to bury radical activism by ceasing to cover it. Television, popular magazines, and daily papers stereotyped Blacks as hardened criminals and welfare chiselers or as the supposedly affluent beneficiaries of reverse "discrimination." White youth were portrayed first as hedonistic hippies and mindless terrorists, later as an apolitical, self-indulgent "me generation." Both were scapegoated as threats to "decent, hard-working Middle America."

During the severe economic recession of the early- to mid- 1970s, former student activists began entering the job market, some taking on responsibility for children. Many were scared by brutal government and right-wing attacks culminating in the murder of rank-and-file activists as well as prominent leaders. Some were strung out on the hard drugs that had become increasingly available in Black and Latin communities and among white youth. Others were disillusioned by mistreatment in movements ravaged by the very social sicknesses they sought to eradicate, including racism, sexism, homophobia, class bias and competition.

Limited by their upbringing, social position, and isolation from older radical traditions, 1960s activists were unable to make the connections and changes required to build movements strong enough to survive and eventually win structural change in the United States. Middle-class students did not sufficiently ally with working and poor people. Too few white activists accepted third world leadership of multi-racial alliances. Too many men refused to practice genuine gender equality.

Originally motivated by goals of quick reforms, 1960s activists were ill-prepared for the long-term struggles in which they found themselves. Overly dependent on media-oriented superstars and one-shot dramatic actions, they failed to develop stable organizations, accountable leadership, and strategic perspective. Creatures of the culture they so despised, they often lacked the patience to sustain tedious grassroots work and painstaking analysis of actual social conditions. They found it hard to accept the slow, uneven pace of personal and political change.

This combination of circumstances, however, did not by itself guarantee political collapse. The achievements of the 1960s movements could have inspired optimism and provided a sense of the power to win other important struggles. The rightward shift of the major media could have enabled alternative newspapers, magazines, theater, film, and video to attract a broader audience and stable funding. The economic downturn of the early 1970s could have united Black militants, New Leftists, and workers in common struggle. Police brutality and government collusion in drug trafficking could have been exposed in ways that undermined support for the authorities and broadened the movements' backing.

By the close of the decade, many of the movements' internal weaknesses were starting to be addressed. Black-led multi-racial alliances, such as Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Poor People's Campaign and the Black Panthers' Rainbow Coalition, were forming. The movements' class base was broadening through Black "revolutionary unions" in auto and other industries, King's increasing focus on economic issues, the New Left's spread to community colleges, and the return of working-class GIs radicalized by their experience in Vietnam. At the same time, the women's movement was confronting the deep sexism which permeated 1960s activism, along with its corollaries: homophobia, sexual violence, militarism, competitiveness, and top-down decision-making.

While the problems of the 1960s movements were enormous, their strengths might have enabled them to overcome their weaknesses had the upsurge not been stifled before activists could learn from their mistakes. Much of the movements' inability to transcend their initial limitations and overcome adversity can be traced to COINTELPRO.

It was through COINTELPRO that the public image of Blacks and New Leftists was distorted to legitimize their arrest and imprisonment and scapegoat them as the cause of working people's problems. The FBI and police instigated violence and fabricated movement horrors. Dissidents were deliberately "criminalized" through false charges, frame-ups, and offensive, bogus leaflets and other materials published in their name. (Specific examples of these and other COINTELPRO operations are presented on pages 41-65.)

COINTELPRO enabled the FBI and police to exacerbate the movements' internal stresses until beleaguered activists turned on one another. Whites were pitted against Blacks, Blacks against Chicanos and Puerto Ricans, students against workers, workers against people on welfare, men against women, religious activists against atheists, Christians against Jews, Jews against Muslims. "Anonymous" accusations of infidelity ripped couples apart. Backers of women's and gay liberation were attacked as "dykes" or "faggots." Money was repeatedly stolen and precious equipment sabotaged to intensify pressure and sow suspicion and mistrust.

Otherwise manageable disagreements were inflamed by COINTELPRO until they erupted into hostile splits that shattered alliances, tore groups apart, and drove dedicated activists out of the movement. Government documents implicate the FBI and police in the bitter break-up of such pivotal groups as the Black Panther Party, SDS, and the Liberation News Service, and in the collapse of repeated efforts to form long-term coalitions across racial, class, and regional lines. While genuine political issues were often involved in these disputes, the outcome could have been different if government agencies had not covertly intervened to subvert compromise and fuel hostility and competition.

Finally, it was COINTELPRO that enabled the FBI and police to eliminate the leaders of mass movements without undermining the image of the United States as a democracy, complete with free speech and the rule of law. Charismatic orators and dynamic organizers were covertly attacked and "neutralized" before their skills could be transferred to others and stable structures established to carry on their work. Malcolm X was killed in a "factional dispute" which the FBI took credit for having "developed" in the Nation of Islam. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the target of an elaborate FBI plot to drive him to suicide and replace him "in his role of the leadership of the Negro people" with conservative Black lawyer Samuel Pierce (later named to Reagan's cabinet). Many have come to view King's eventual assassination (and Malcolm's as well) as itself a domestic covert operation.

Other prominent radicals faced similar attack when they began to develop broad followings and express anti-capitalist ideas. Some were portrayed as crooks, thugs, philanderers, or government agents, while others were physically threatened or assaulted until they abandoned their work. Still others were murdered under phony pretexts, such as "shootouts" in which the only shots were fired by the police.

To help bring down a major target, the FBI often combined these approaches in strategic sequence. Take the case of the "underground press," a network of some 400 radical weeklies and several national news services, which once boasted a combined readership of close to 30 million. In the late 1960s, government agents raided the offices of alternative newspapers across the country in purported pursuit of drugs and fugitives. In the process, they destroyed typewriters, cameras, printing presses, layout equipment, business records, and research files, and roughed up and jailed staffers on bogus charges. Meanwhile, the FBI was persuading record companies to withdraw lucrative advertising and arranging for printers, suppliers, and distributors to drop underground press accounts. With their already shaky operations in disarray, the papers and news services were easy targets for a final phase of COINTELPRO disruption. Forged correspondence, anonymous accusations, and infiltrators' manipulation provoked a flurry of wild charges and counter-charges that played a major role in bringing many of these promising endeavors to a premature end.

A similar pattern can be discerned from the history of the Black Panther Party. Brutal government attacks initially elicited broad support for this new, militant, highly visible national organization and its popular ten-point socialist program for Black self-determination. Saturday, July 25,2009 there were 9 vehicles remaining on site. Two were being worked on (transmission replacement on one, timing chain on the other). The last of the necessary parts had been delivered to the parts store in Cuba and had been picked up. The last of the water pipe was being wrapped and loaded. All of the trash had been removed and recycled or taken to the transfer station.

The interior of the site was growing back beautifully. The late afternoon downpours - called the 'monsoon season' here in New Mexico - has come early this year. This has meant that our crews have faced heavy rainstorms that last only a half hour or so. And that has soaked the ground, meaning that where we have scarified and duffed the soil, green plants have poked up and are growing abundantly.all native species. So in all the high-use areas there is already green groundcover. It's very beautiful. All the trails have been re-naturalized. And there have been waterbars put where there is chance for erosion. The FS has walked thru several times and I think they like what they see. All the items on our mutual list have been done.

When I left the site yesterday evening the cleanup was in its final phase: exiting the operating plan area. Everyone remaining was aligned with a vehicle. There was one cleanup community firepit and two small warming fires remaining. Heavy rains or something unforeseen could slow the exit down. But I think we have done a sweet job leaving Parque Venado and its surrounding woodlands.

On July 2, 2008, a man was pulled from a car in a Rainbow Gathering parking area, tazed multiple times, beaten, and arrested by Incident Command LEO's.
On July 3, 2008, one woman was assaulted, another peppersprayed, both were taken down and also charged by LEO's during the infamous Kid Village provocateur fracas.

This is the most egregious abuse of police power -- to inflict violence on a citizen, and then malicious criminal charges, insult upon injury, and the burden of prosecution. Three participants in the 2008 Rainbow Gathering in Wyoming were turned into hapless Defendants, and they have refused to roll over or back down: Dale Kellogg, Skye Riggs, and Rose Stanley.

The Government & Court have dallied and dithered over these cases for over a year, apparently hoping to wear down the charged parties and force a deal. Instead, these Defendants have been frustrated and fed up with the delays (i.e., denial of speedy trial), and pushed their attorneys for resolution -- and the stalemate finally broke a few days ago.

One defense lawyer sent the news and stated the needs:
"We are set for trial on September 28, 2009 at 8 am in Lander, WY. We must file witness and exhibit lists no later than August 3, 2009. This means we must contact all of those who will be testifying. We must ascertain whether they can appear and also gather all contact information. ..."

This is the last chance for witnesses to come forward.

10 hours a month

I'm just curious what people might think of this idea. I'm starting a new church, and there's a big problem because people really don't take the time to consider deep concepts. Without that, there's no learning.

So here's my idea. I'd like to form a group in which all the members agree to each month give one person 10 hours of their time to allow that person to really explain things to them. That person might have them read things, or talk to them, or whatever. Each person would be assigned a different person each month, and it'd be assigned by a dice roll or some other random manner.

I'll not say anything more about it, 'cause I'd like to hear what your first impressions of the idea are.

I am starting this topic to focus Rainbows from around the world to keep the purity of the Rainbow spirit here in the middle east.
There is a group of brothers and sister who are focalizing gatherings they call "peace in the middle east rainbow gatherings". I feel that this compromises Rainbow Family both here and internationally by associating us with such fragmented and politically charged terminology. I feel it is deluding the universal nature of the Rainbow calling. Many of us have expressed this to the family who is focalizing these gatherings but it seems like the temptation to use the family for other agendas is too strong. holy shit its hot down out of the mountains!we made it as far as Oklahoma so far.a cpl days driving through east New Mexico,the pan handle of Texas and western Oklahoma sucked and was well over a hundred degrees.on the bright side the Jeep took it all in stride.and thanks critter for hot wiring my cooling fan for me...it worked like a charm.

the Gathering was awesome.the Teahouse fucking rocked!our crew rocked face this year,and i can't wait to show off the pictures of arrrr build this year.we had a huge kitchen built as fancy as they come.big props to our jewish carpenter!we had a fat stove complete with a joly rodger clay front that said tea time.a stage,two cadged stripper poles [taken down before the fourth] and a huge "Tea" shaped bliss fire pit.we had a ton of awesome live bands on the stage including some accompanying drums!and we gave away somewhere around 10 thousand or so gallons of herbal hydration {TEA} to the masses.Arrrr flag was posted somewhere around 100 ft high this year.thats about 3 feet above the tallest tree in arrr camp.we imported a Canadian to do that.i've truly never seen another flag as tall as that one at a Gathering before.all of our neighbors were mostly cool and only a negligible amount of complaints about the horns this year.all in all i'd say we had an excellent time this year.we even had some arizona fam that we haven't see in what seems like ten years!

i want to take the time and say thanks to everyone who chipped in and helped us get the equipment out to New Mexico this year!i really wasn't going to be able to to do it alone.we raised close 1100 dollars!thats about half of what it cost to get there this year.

also big props for the crew this year.we had a lot of new faces and few for their second and third tea houses.you all busted your asses and made it happen big this year!i can't speak highly enough of ya's.Byron and Elijah......you kids fucking rock!if everyone worked as hard as those two fuckers Rainbow would change the world in no time....

I have a rather simple question that may seem alittle bizarre to use a polite word. What is Rainbow Family? The reason I am asking is that I have been a Corporate Suit for 25 years and I have become totally upset with it. I wake up in the morning and know there is so much more to life than a 9 to 5 in my case a 24/7 Network Management job. I have lost my humanity and know where it has gone I just am not sure how to get to it. The rat race continues on down the road and I am looking to step out of the hamster wheel. It really does sound stupid but how to you find like minded people? I have been stuck where they want me in a cubicle and in front of my mental conditioning TV shows. How do you find humanity again? How do you live in peace with the earth again? It is every clear to me that humans living in peace and equality with each other will profoundly change life for the better. Does anyone know of location in Kansas City area to meet and speak with others? Ughhhh I feel so lost.....

Nice gentle terrain with long meadows and great forest.
Be prepared for cold nights (low 40's to 50 degrees)
Warm days in the mid 80's and sunny.

bring good rain gear.

FS Road 103 on left, go 2 miles to FS Road 69 on left then drive
9 miles to where FS Road 69 meets FS Road 70

Hello All! My husband and I are moving to Northern California from North Carolina. We haven't lived in N Cal in so long that we're pretty out of touch with which towns we would like. Can anyone give us some suggestions on great places to live in Sonoma or Mendocino counties? We need Bohemians, a liberal atmosphere, relative affordability, nature, a little excitement now and then, and community. We plan to buy a house, raise a family, and build a life there. Would love your suggestions! Thanks!

The following is a list of places where there exists a sizable hippy population, where there is tolerance towards hippies, where hippies are free to pursue their lifestyle with community support. Whether you're looking to visit or relocate, you can be sure there'll be places to stay, interesting things to see and do, and lots of other hippies in these places. Since most of these were posted on the site by visitors to Hippyland, I cannot guarantee the accuracy of each report. Alabama
"We've got lots of forests in North Alabama and sometimes a group called the Rainbow People come to Mount Cheaha and harmonize with nature. There are a great number of hippies living in the Calhoun County area; mainly in Anniston, Oxford and Jacksonville, Alabama. If any hippies need somewhere to move to, come on to Alabama. We have plenty of room and the people of our land don't care what you look like."

Alaska
"After spending the past few summers in the wonderful state of Alaska, I must let you know that the entire state is a great place to be. All summer long there are bluegrass shows, festivals and trips to be taken. Whether you are into the Matanuska thunderfuck, fruity pebbles, or any of the other delectables of the state, or just hitching around to see the land, you surely are welcome no matter what you are. I've had more amazing experiences in Alaska than I could ever imagine. My boyfriend and I hitched over a thousand miles to Homer. We had no problems getting a ride. Jerry's twin (right down to the nubby fingers) picked us up and let us camp in his front yard, fed us strawberry daiquiris and smoked all night. Let everyone know that Alaska is only part of the US because of it's government and monetary units. Go and visit, you may never come back :)"

Delta Junction, Alaska - according to a contributor is the "highest per capita weed smokin' community - about 85% of the town here does!"

Homer, Alaska - Located on the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula it's FULL of people living as they wish. Some in schoolbuses, some in cabins, many w/o running water, electricity or with all the amenities, but the hearts are full. There are people living off the grid and the entire town is geared toward spirituality. The town of Homer has been called for many years, 'the cosmic hamlet by the sea'. Check out available web sites...although most of those are geared toward tourists. Do the bay...you will find many interesting people living a conscious, purposeful life

Matanuska Valley, Alaska - Here grows the wonderful Matanuska Thunder Fuck, people all over the country who have tried Alaskan weed beg for more of this! Many laid back hippies moved to Alaska because marijuana was legal until 1990.

Arizona
Bisbee, Arizona - This small community really flourished when the mining-company which owned the town bailed out in the mid-seventies and hippies from all over moved in. There is a great community here, with a co-op and lots of hippy artists living out in the desert. Check it out for yourself! Have a brew and a few games of nine ball at the Bisbee Grand, or play hacky sack in the grassy park in front of the mining museum right in downtown.
Flagstaff, Arizona - a large community or family of hippies came here for the diversity of "the kind" and other "party favors." With the San Francisco Peaks and Sedona only twenty minutes away the opportunities for adventure are endless.
Prescott, Arizona - The home of Prescott, University. You will find a large number of artists, mountain bikers, hikers, and outdoorsmen in this town, along with communes galore. Dancing circles of hippies beating drums and enjoying life in the middle of the wilderness are seen on mountain tops near here. People tell me that the university here is one of the most open-minded in the world, and it offers a variety of alternative majors (mountain climbing, kayaking, etc.) and the majority of students are studying from abroad.
Sedona, Arizona - A hippie haven since before the Harmonic Convergence, this little town grew way too big and unfortunately allowed Macdonald's and other chains to destroy the charm. They say the vortexes are still there, humming in the mountains and sacred secret places.
Tempe, Arizona - A visitor wrote us that "every Sunday there is a gathering of kind brothers and sisters in Tempe at the Sail Inn. We have been getting together for about two years for an afternoon of kind vibes with the incredible Grateful Dead cover band Noodles. They play from 4:20 till? If you're ever in town, we would love to have you join us. Hope to see ya sometime."
Tucson, Arizona - Home to the University of Arizona and a large hippy population, Tucson is happening! 4th Avenue is a hangout with lots of cool shops, cafes and clubs. The street occasionally gets transformed into a huge Art Festival. There's usually some good music around town, plus the nice climate and cheap smoke keeps everybody groovin'! That's why some call it "TooStoned".

California
Arcata, California - "This is the best place to go if you're a hippie.. well, besides the Haight-Ashbury. It's located in Humboldt County, which is pretty well-known for it's marijuana growing. The community is great, there are always festivals going on about the earth, such as the Mushroom Fair, the Hemp Festival, North Country Fair, everything you can imagine. I love it here! The people are so supportive of you.. they've even made a law which states that women can indeed go topless around the plaza in the centre of town. ; )
Arcata is a totally unreal place to check out and LIVE too! The rents are cheap and it seems everyone is way laid back, with Humboldt next door and being amongst the greatest redwoods in the world, how can you go wrong!"
Humboldt, California - "I Personally Don't Think You Emphasized how Many Hippies And How Much Ganja There really Is Out in Humboldt, Humboldt Is Like One Of The Main Places. We are the center of the "emerald triangle"... need I say more?"
Mt. Shasta, California - "One of the most sacred places on earth. Everyone is so totally kind. The mountain pours out its love and watches over all its inhabitants. It snows for days in the winter, but in the summer I go live in the woods and draw off the healing energies. Another kind thing is that the cops realize that hippies are really laid back and we do a lot for the community and keep it beautiful, therefore we all do well living in harmony."
San Diego, California - Especially Ocean Beach, Encinitas areas. Laid back mixture of surfers and hippies make for a cool scene. Check out The Black a famous headshop in O.B. Also "blacks beach every full moon at 8:00 p.m."
San Francisco, California - Is still happening, especially the Haight-Asbury and Berkeley areas. The place where it all began in the Summer of Love, 1967 and where it continues to this day.
Santa Cruz, California - "I'm not sure there is really a large population of hippies IN Santa Cruz--it's kind of a melting pot of all types of people--but if you're looking for some really beautiful scenery, kind people, and totally peaceful chillin', head to one of the towns a little bit north of Santa Cruz. Felton, Boulder Creek, Bonny Doon...it's way mellow there, and everyone's basically into mother nature and their brothers and sisters. It's also real close to the ocean. It's one of the prettiest areas you can imagine...head there on your travels. You won't be sorry!"
Venice Beach, California - every Sunday people get together and form a drum circle. "It's a hippie haven and it lasts until sunset. Come visit us!"

Colorado
Boulder, Colorado - "As one who has lived in and visited Boulder, CO over the years, I must warn everybody not to judge a book by it's cover. Sure, Boulder is a very hip & fun town, but times are changing. Due to an ever-increasing influx of "hippies", Deadheads, Phishheads, etc., the local law enforcement has been cracking down on the free-spirited mentality of our lifestyle. I have personally witnessed numerous human rights violations & unnecessary arrests all stemming from pressure by the local government & Boulder residents to "clean up the town". I mean, how many places can you go where both you AND YOUR DOG get arrested in the same day?!!! Don't laugh, because it has happened!"
Nederland, Colorado - 17 miles west, up the canyon from Boulder. This town has old to young hippies from all over the country. Very awesome music scene for a little mountain town (Leftover Salmon, etc...). "Majical place." "Very kind in many ways."

Connecticut
Ellington, Connecticut - "Because, like there's a lot of hippies here - it's a real trip man."

Delaware
Newark, Delaware - this place is the home of the University of Delaware. "Tons of hippies here. Most live on Madison which consists of apartment/townhouses and this friendly group is very intelligent and KIND."

Florida
Orlando, Florida - "Gainesville is not all the bomb that you say it is. it is not the "hippy capital" of phlorida. there are kydz there cause there is a college. that's it. just a college. if there were no college, the town would be non-existent. there are some nice kydz there, but no family. they have some good shows maybe once a month. i live in Orlando. it is mofuckin awesome! i have lived in many places and for about 6 mos. in different places in phlorida. The "hippy capital" is definitely St. Augustine. SUCH A fabulous family!! there's a beach, there's plenty of places to sell crafts on the street all year round. there's tons of cool shit like an old fort that you can trip around in and plenty of kynd folks. not much of a nightlife unfortunately. They never have big name bands. Orlando on the other hand is a mecca. we get awesome shows here pretty regularly. we've got the house of blues, we've got a university, we're an hour from the beach, an hour from Daytona Beach, not much further from Gainesville, a little less from St. Augustine. we've got the big ekon river. two drum circles every week. we've got the Orlando family. we've got the hippy hole."
Key West, Florida - "Despite the commercialism, the boat people and street performers, still living the good life. The town is tolerant of long hairs and pot is available from Jamaica. Love the town but there are some drawbacks."

Georgia
Atlanta, Georgia - "There is a certain area in Atlanta that is known as Midtown which houses an area known as Little Five Points. This is truly the hippie haven of the south - or at least Georgia. In this little portion of town there are many body art and vintage shops, including a favorite of the locals called Groovy Girls. Other odds and ends are sold around here such as African drums, futons, and crystals. Just like the goods that are sold here, the people are an assorted mixture as well. New age Flower Children, aging Flower Children, skateboarders, and Rastafarians line the streets daily. Drum circles are common practices here. Little Five Points and the nearby Piedmont Park also host the Pot Festival every year."

Hawaii
Big Island and Kauai - Lots of growers here. Scene is low key and laid back. Communes around. On Big Island, the hippies are all in the Puna District mainly in the Pahoa area from Kalapana to Pahoa and from Pahoa over to Volcano.
Maui, Hawaii - Still full of hippies living on the slopes of Haleakela, the dormant volcano, in places like Kipahulu, Kula, Hana, Paia. You'll need a few gold cards to visit here. This scene is expensive.

Idaho
Moscow, Idaho - "You will find some of the most absolutely wonderful people there! Besides the people, Moscow is the Mecca of outdoor activities and being one with nature and life."

Indiana
Bloomington, Indiana - "This town has a modest, but decent, hippie community. At 4:20 (p.m.) at a park on 9th Street, there is a drum circle. Also a cafe/restaurant called the Runcible Spoon is visited by many hippies and other interesting people. A few hippies (roughly 6) work there as well. The restaurant is located on 6th Street downtown. Across the back parking lot of this restaurant is a little natural foods Co-op store called Bloomingfoods, where many hippies are employed, and where most hippies buy all their essentials. On Kirkwood Avenue, the most active part of the downtown, there is a little shop called the Dharma Emporium, owned and frequented by lots of groovy people. On Walnut Street, there lies a shop called the Magic Bus, owned and operated by a bunch of hippies that live in the back; kind and gentle folk. Also, the town of Bloomington is mostly liberal, and there are a lot of interesting people. Just stay away from the west side of town: this is a "thriving" commercial part of town with no trees and a lot of new subdivisions. Bad, bad, bad."
Needmore, Indiana - "This is a tiny, tiny place way, way out in the boonies, but an ideal location for a commune, wouldn't you say? Yes, Lothlorien is the name of the place and is just south of Bloomington a ways. Lothlorien is the beautiful location of many festivals throughout the year, and they have an open season during which space can be reserved for celebrations. Lovely, lovely place. Iowa
Quad Cities, Iowa - "We have started a small hippie community. Our Rainbow Family has potlucks every other Sunday campouts every month or so."

Kansas
Lawrence, Kansas - "The place is very chill and down to earth. As much as marijuana seems to be a symbol of hippydom, i would have to say that Lawrence grows some of the finer buds in the states, of course next to Oregon and Boulder."

Kentucky
Louisville, Kentucky - "Bardstown Road is a large street where you can not only find hippies, but every kind of person there is. The best parts of Bardstown Road stretch for about 3 miles. It's lined with eclectic shops, head and hemp and beads and vintage clothing...as well as vegetarian cuisine. It's a great place to just take a walk. It really does look like it's straight out of 1968. There are great coffee shops with outdoor cafes, "gently used" book stores, instrument and record shops, head shops, vintage clothing stores, specialty stores and everything in between. It's absolutely the best place in Louisville to visit!!!"
"There is a happy thriving hippie community here. Cherokee Park is home to many drummers and smokers. This city also has a solid gay community, and a well-known affinity for birthing original bands--there are very many opportunities for budding musicians to meet like-minded folks...Also many poets and artists claim Louisville for their home. It is groovy."

Maine
Industry, Maine - "Plenty of old hippies, die hard hippies, new hippies and a bunch of drunk ones too you. Ever hear of Hempstock? That's in the town right next to us. Then Harvestfest isn't too far away either."
Starks, Maine - "Home of the annual HEMPSTOCK. More than 30 bands will play through-out the weekend of August 14th...many local bands.......There were no reported arrests last year !!!! And everyone is Hippie like up there in Maine anyway..."

Maryland
Mount Rainier, Maryland - "A funky little town near DC that literally hasn't changed since the 60's. Or if it has, the resemblance has gotten even closer. Since there's a major African American presence it has a somewhat Rastafarian ambiance. Check out the Glut Food Co-op (started by Marxists in 1969), the Eye Opener coffee shop (owned by a Deadhead) and the used furniture / alternative health stores. Possibly the cheapest place you can live between the mountains and the Chesapeake, if you're a hippie."

Takoma Park, DC/Maryland - "Takoma Park is known as the Berkeley of the East. Competitors, we're more modest than that, please challenge us to greatness. DC is famous for being the most politically liberal big city, but then it's also famous for being the nexus of the Counter-Counter-Culture (it's actually hip to be drug free here, though you can do just about anything in public and still get elected to high office), so you may be wondering, where do hippies fit in? As it happens, Takoma Park is not the sad, commercialized, isolated enclave of hipness that you find in most big cities. It is at the geographic heart of a wreath of easygoing, progressive, really racially integrated, communities. Which is why we've escaped gentrification and "hip"-ization & remain a low-key, 70's style small town. White-bread hipsters with racial jones beware.
Hippiedom here is not about commercial lifestyle. It's part of the culture. Nobody moves here for the shopping or arts, but very large percentages of the populations are vegetarians, recyclers, renters, non-car owners, members of the two co-ops. We cheer on the annual Reel mower Brigade in their efforts to ban gas lawnmowers. To benefit our large illegal alien population, who can vote, we have a tradition of hiring police chiefs committed to not cooperating with the IMF. Bizarrely, we're also a mecca for evangelicals and libertarians who share a similar political zeal and fondness for natural food - one of the organic co-ops is the world's largest Christian book store, and the other is staffed by ex-Maoists. There aren't many tensions in the community, though. Our favorite mayor was a ninety yr. old Socialist. Anyhow, we used to have two wild roosters, but one got run over. You can hear the other one crowing behind the boarding houses downtown, between the House of Musical Traditions and the Metaphysical Chapel, on the spring solstice when the Foggy Bottom Morris Men gather to dance the sun up.
Definitely a community for longtime residents & hippies-at-heart; fair-weather hippies will get bored and move to some overrated part of DC. We've already got too many yuppies, most of whom were still hippies before they moved here and got a job teaching at the Jane Goodall Institute or Nuclear Environmental Research group or something similar in town, so I guess they're okay."

Massachuesetts
Amherst, Massachuesetts - "Home to the annual "Extravaganja" festival, Amherst residents are about to vote on a decriminalization of marijuana referendum. Amherst boasts a huge student population -- from Amherst College, Hampshire College, and UMass-- and is less than 10 minutes from Northampton, another hippy haven. Great concerts and shows, wonderful cheap restaurants, and an extremely liberal community."

Northampton, Massachuesetts - "Great place for hippies and hippie-types. Tolerant largely gay community welcomes "alternative people". Love the place! Lots of hippie shops and restaurants too!!"

West Newbury and Newburyport, Massachuesetts - "are filled with tons of young hippies. In Newburyport there are a lot of cool little coffee houses located on an old 1800 waterfront. Many places to toke up and everything is always readily available. People such as Toots and the Maytalls, Livingston Taylor (James' bro) and David Grisman have performed in this small town."

Michigan
Ann Arbor, Michigan - "There is a Hash Bash every year there and so many hippies come. Ann Arbor is a great place."

Saugatuck, Michigan - "This is truly a hip community, located along the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan, surrounded by picturesque sand dunes. Saugatuck is the epicenter of many western Michigan coastal communities offering a very laid-back chilled atmosphere, and amongst the population you will find an immense multitude of artists and a majority of open-minded people. The downtown is very eclectic, with many far-out shops, including the popular Shakedown Street, offering a variety of Grateful Dead and hippy-related merchandise. Coffee shops are also quite abundant here. There's also a lot of very cool natural attractions, such as Mt. Baldhead and Oval Beach. The entire scene here reeks of peace. I must say that this town is the ultimate chill-spot."

Missouri
St. Louis, Missouri - "There is a substantial hippie community that exists on St. Louis' South Side around the area of South Grand Avenue. There is also another older, but growing hippie enclave in a close-in suburb of St. Louis. Known as the University City Loop along 10 blocks of Delmar Boulevard, the area is hopping with hippie-run shops and vendor stands."
Columbia, Missouri - Downtown Peace Park and Peace Nook
Westport, Missouri - "Missouri has more then two hippy hangouts (gasp!). Westport's a very cool place. It has head shops, VW buses, and lots of drugs."

Montana
Missoula, Montana - "...is a hip place with many hippies. Its population is small so everything is laid back. It's very similar to Eugene Oregon, but without the rain. There are a lot of hippy stores and vegetarian restaurants. The town lies over a pretty river and is next to a large mountain so many people hike, bike, hunt shrooms and river raft. Missoula is also the home of Plunker, one of the founders of the Rainbow Nation."

Nebraska
Omaha, Nebraska "...is a pretty phun li'l town. Pretty good family. There are NO CLUBS there, so those annoying clubkids are not even present (woo-hoo!). They'll introduce you to a real rave, which everyone should experience. Omaha also has the oldmarket which is downtown and a fun place to hang out day and night with a park to the east, the Big Slides (extreme amounts of child-like fun) on the north, the abandoned warehouses are also right near where the parties rage at night. Lots of grassroots organizations are sprouting up. Definitely worth checking out if you're traveling through to Boulder or somewhere."

New Mexico
Taos, New Mexico - "I went to Taos, New Mexico last summer and found the place swarming with beautiful people. There are a few communes right outside of town... where Easy Rider was filmed. Lots of freaks around and so much to learn from each other... ecstacy. A bit touristy, but not yet too corrupt with society."

Silver City, New Mexico - is a hippy mecca. They have loads of herbal stores in the city with "classes" on locating and identifying local herbs. Their co-op bulletin board is loaded with new age info. They have drum circles and a number of communes within 25 miles of the city, some better than others. Don't forget to ask about the hot springs.

New York
Ithaca, New York - "...has one of the largest hippie populations in New York State. It has natural beauty and is crawling with old and new hippies. It's home to many communes, head shops, natural groceries, drum circles, and kind bud. Ithaca has a sizeable college population."
New Paltz, New York - Home to State University of NY at New Paltz, this small town has a sizable hippy community as well as students. The young feeling is a refreshing change from upstate NY's older crowd. "There are just as many real hippies there as there are in Woodstock, N.Y. I know this because I am a long hair dreded hippy that lives near by both of these locations. The good thing about New Paltz is that it isn't nearly as hyped up as Woodstock. This provides for a nice relaxing atmosphere."
Tonawanda, New York - "There is a lot of hippies in Tonawanda NY. We have protested so many times and when we used to be the Lumber Capital of the world, we made them stop cutting the trees down, and we saved a lot of trees."
Woodstock, New York - Not the actual location of the famous festival (that is Bethel, N.Y.), and a bit of a tourist trap, but yes, lots of hippies live here.

North Carolina
Asheville, North Carolina "...is undoubtedly one of the kindest places on the East Coast. Nice nuggets, a lively and experimental music scene, and the overall friendly atmosphere make this town a must for nomadic freaky friends! I'll see you when I roll through town."

Ohio
Yellow Springs, Ohio - (east of Dayton) pop. 10,000 "Home of the Ivy League Antioch College, head shops, hemp and Earth Friendly clothing and jewelry stores, several music stores (one specializing in hand made drums) and several specialty gift stores. One of Dayton's biggest hippie hangouts."
Columbus, Ohio - pop. 2,500,000. High Street @ Ohio State University (Largest University in the US, 70,000 students) dozens of head shops, 100's of specialty stores including 50 record and tape stores (tons of used) dozens of hemp clothing stores.
Waynesville, Ohio - "Near Fairborn. The Renaissance Festival. Hippies everywhere you look and lots of stuff about medieval times.... you can buy clothes and different things. It's a great place to meet people and everyone shares everything."

Oregon
Just about Any city in Oregon West of the Cascade Mountains is a Hippy Haven. Oregon is the only state where hippies enjoy a majority at the voting booths come election time. There's a saying going around "Hippies don't die. They just move to Oregon." During the past few years hippies have been moving to Oregon in droves because there's employment for hippies here, and we hippies can go full out in our glad rags in public view with out being accosted, laughed at or put down. Oregon is a true hippy Haven. Under an oz. of pot isn't illegal here. It's only a civil fine that would cost you $500.
Corvallis, Oregon - Corvallis, Oregon has a lot of hippies. "There are so many coffee shops and bookstores to see them at. The waterfront is a wonderful place to sit and enjoy if you are a hippy."
Eugene, Oregon - Near the site of the Oregon Country Faire (each July) where each year hippies gather to celebrate their hippiness. Home to the University of Oregon, many cooperatives, communes galore, a real cool Saturday Market, and eco-consciousness.
Portland, Oregon - is a wonderful place that is very tolerant of hippie-types. Plenty of great people, and home to some great places, such as the nationally famous Saturday Market, a great place to meet people and just chill on the waterfront.

Pennsylvania
New Hope, Pennsylvania - There are a whole lot of hippies there and lots of shops. It's on a river and there's a smaller one within it. Many, many shops a lot of artwork, nice places to eat (Places you can eat lunch outside by the river and exotic flavor ice creams)."

The Rainbow Gathering

South Carolina
Hilton Head, South Carolina - "Everybody on this li'l tourist island is flowing. There's a small, but vivid hippie population, who tend to gather at Looce Lucy's or Black Market Minerals in Coligny Plaza, and The Hemp Seed off Sea Pines Circle. Unless you're at the high school, nobody is a hassler. It's good as far as South Carolina goes, I'd say haul your asses down here for a little peace on the beach."
Spartanburg, South Carolina - "It's a medium size city in Upstate SC. I grew up on the east side with tons of hippies. Our parents were the original flower children and for the most part raised us in true hippie fashion. There isn't a lot for teenagers to do in Spartanburg, but we make do. One of our favorite places to hang out is Pill Hill, a park near the high school. Anyway Spartanburg is a nice city, kind of boring, but definitely full of hippies."

Tennessee

Texas
Austin, Texas - "the second largest vegetarian population in the nation....along with some great scenery here in the hill country. People should check it out. My older brother lives there, and works as a chef. Almost every night we get 2 or 3 bucks from each of his roommates, head up to Central Market and get tons of fresh fruit, vegetables, etc. - and have a giant veggie-kabob for dinner. It feeds everyone and also provides for a great way to get together at night in the backyard and just hang out. Barton Creek Park is another great hangout - it's a linear park that follows Barton Creek - along the cliff walls there are several caves for exploring... just a totally surreal environment. Everyone in Austin just seems so mellow and content, i wish i could live there - but for now I'll just be happy with visiting...."

Utah
"Hey, there are more than Mormons in Utah! Check out Moab sometime, you'll find plenty of hippies there!"

Vermont
"There aren't that many hippies but there is weed everywhere!!! And a lot of other drugs. What else is there to do up here?"
Burlington, Vermont - "on Church Street is the coolest place to be. There's varieties of people including hippies, mostly new hippies. There's also a restaurant type place off Church Street called Necters, which is where all the bands eat when they come to play down the street at Club Toast. Necters serves the most addicting gravy fries you will ever eat. Bands such as Phish, Belizbeha, and tons of others eat there. There's also really cool places to shop, and there's a green which is the hippies grassy knoll."

Virginia
Floyd, Virginia - "Having grown up in the Blue Ridge, I am fortunate enough to have been thoroughly familiarized with the hippie pilgrimage that has taken place since the early 70's.....and they're all still heading to Floyd county. I believe there must be upwards of 10 intentional communities up on the beautiful plateau where Floyd County is situated and the numbers are ever growing. The nice thing, too, is that the population is fairly consistent, that is to say that it's not really too transient. People go there and they tend to stay. It's amazingly beautiful, and I'm so glad that it's just right outside my back door."

Washington
"There is a large hippie community in Northeast Washington especially around the small town of Republic and Northern Stevens county."
Bellingham, Washington -"This beautiful place is an island of hip folk in the Northwest."
Olympia, Washington - "Old and young hippies hanging out among the earth and animal friendly paradise in the Northwest. Veggie restaurants abound."
Orcas Island, Washington - "In the San Juan Islands. It's an old hippy commune where many hippies still go. It's a campsite so if you're looking for vacation, it's definitely the place."
Seattle, Washington - "I moved here two years ago from LA and find this town to be the most hip place on the west coast. From Fremont to Belltown, from Pike Place to Capital Hill, Seattle is what's happening."

West Virginia
Morgantown, West Virginia - "Downtown on High Street and surrounding areas are two REALLY good head shops...The Den and Cool Ridge, several coffee shops, including The Blue Moose (the best bohemian coffee shop}. There's also a really good bead shop, comic shops, bike shops, and bunches of restaurants. In West Va. anywhere long hair is the norm, (I even worked at Monkey Wards w/shoulder-length hair) and there are lots of long-haired self-sufficient types living in the woods with sweat lodges, drumming parties, outhouses, log homes, herb gardens, and co-ops."

Wisconsin
Madison, Wisconsin - "A beautiful downtown, with a beautiful university right on the lake, lots of housing co-ops, and really friendly and nice people. People from Wisconsin tend to be slightly dingy, and Madison is considered to be the craziest town in the state (it's also the state capital) - but it's the right kind of crazy, in my opinion. The only drawback is that it gets a little cold there in winter."

"Madison is a VERY groovy place, and state street is chock full of head shops/coffee shops/every shop that deviates from the norm that you can think of......there is even a Nepali restaurant that I loved....also loads of interesting people throughout the town. I
couldn't believe how many street performers I saw, there were devil-sticks flying everywhere and lone saxophonists filling up the empty alleyways, soothing your mind like a mental Halls cough drop."

Canada
Vancouver, Victoria and Nelson, Canada - "(A.K.A. hippytown in the boonies)? Vancouver is the founding city of Greenpeace, and our mainstream neighbours to the south (of course not including you marvelous and open-minded brothers + sisters) call us Columbia of the north! AND WE'VE LEGALIZED HEMP TOO!"

Tofino, British Columbia, Canada - "It's right on the ocean, and I have never seen so many free spirited, beautiful people in my life. Everyone was so kind to everyone. Lots of free flowing clothes and flowers. You're always near a beach for a picnic, or just lounging. My guitar was quite welcome there. Tofino is not particularly friendly since the locals are inundated with the mass influx of tourists every year, so they have become somewhat immune to outsiders."

Kitchener Ontario Canada - "Hippies roam the streets of Kitchener and especially Cambridge. We are up there along with the freaks and jocks, geeks and the boring ones. Hippies are the best, with our butterfly shirts and bell-bottoms, we have our own twists to the 60's fashions."

In response another visitor wrote:
"Thought I'd add a note to what our obviously young friend above has said, the scene here is extremely diversified, there is much to do see and experience. I have jokingly referred to Kitchener for years as the Berkley of Canada. For some strange reason this little city is a drawing card for hippies. But don't show up expecting chaos and revolution in the air, because for the ten years I've lived here, most of what I've seen is behind the scenes, although the older hippie and deadhead community here threw some of the biggest bashes going."

The Gulf Islands B.C. Canada - "particularly Gabriola, Hornby and Cortes. Enchanted, laid-back, new-age. Hornby Island does in fact have hippies. However, the island has become overcrowded and increasingly slick and commercial. Not so "groovy" now. Cortes Island, which is rather remote and is a pleasant looking place, was inundated by marine radiation dumps from government ships about 30 years ago before pollution regulations were enforced. Many people on this island have developed cancer as a result of this, including the majority of the local police department who regularly patrol the area. Under no conditions, would I ever choose to live there, as a hippy."

Joussard, Alberta, Canada, Location of the NORTH COUNTRY FAIR. "Each summer on June 20-23 (sometimes on the 19th, depending which one falls on Friday) there is a Summer Solstice Celebration held in this little northern Alberta town. Hippies and free spirits alike come from all over to enjoy this wonderful enlightening experience of live music, new age work-shops, dancing and of course the artisan market. Situated beside the Lesser Slave Lake, there are many great places to camp on and off the fair site. It's like taking a step back in time, if only for one memorable weekend a year, to see beautiful people join together and celebrate the longest day of the year. This year is the 20th celebration of the North Country Fair and it will surely be a huge gathering of the free."

Sherbrooke and Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada - "the townships are also the most English place in Quebec. Many old and younger hippies live out in the country here. There's also been a few sizeable communes, one of them mysteriously gone leaving all their stuff behind."

Montreal and Quebec, Canada - "also have huge countercultural activity. If you're looking for cheap drugs you've come to the right place. Rent is super cheap, but jobs may not be available."
"Just want to add a note about Montreal. This is a city with a lot of Spirit. It's a place where freedom and individuality are cherished. Where people can still get by doing their art & music. Where hundreds of drummers and dancers meet on the mountain to celebrate regularly. Where you can always find a good veggie meal, and share a spliff on the street with a friend. Many Rainbow Family folks here too."

Central America

Mexico - Long an escape for the gringos, still an interesting country to visit from Baha to the Yucatan, lots of places to explore and hang out.
Maruata, Mexico - "On the coast of Michoacan, Maruata has been a mecca for some time now. The big Parties are Christmas and Easter. No hotels, only camping. Lots of drums and other music. The locals are Nahuatl Indians, and extremely friendly. Best beach on the West Coast of Mexico. Good herb for around five dollars an ounce, plus the occasional peyote surprise. Please bring sheets of blotter acid, there's always a terrible shortage. Things are a bit weird since the gathering of '95-'96 but there's always room for a few more freaks."
Zipolite, Mexico - "I was there maybe 3 years ago and it was the best most beautiful hippy place ever. Hammocks on the beach $1 a night. Grass can be ordered and delivered from ones hammock. Food is great too. Strong waves - watch it! Nice sunsets."

Costa Rica - "is a way cool place. There are many kind nature spirits there. Hey, every time someone greets you they say "Pura Vida" (pure life). Just that line shows you that the country is totally at peace."

"What can I say except for that this is the ultimate haven for anyone who has grasped peace and knows how to live life to the fullest.....Pura Vida (pure life) is not only the universal greeting, but it's a great substitute for "cool". (My bus driver Rodrigo used it that way). The people are very hip here. Incredible atmosphere......and the food is the best I've ever had!"

Guatemala - Lots of hippies live in communities here. Mayans are very cool people, but check with the State Department for warnings, as occasionally there is political violence in certain areas.

Tikal, Guatemala - A very important hippy ancient Maya site. Stay on the island when in Flores. The town is a bit rough. Tikal is beautiful, make sure you go out into the jungles where you can see so many monkeys! The grass is top quality there too. But sometimes climbing those pyramids can be a bit of a scary experience, especially when remembering that they were built extra steep just so when you were thrown down the steps you weren't going to stop till you hit the bottom!"

Europe
Amsterdam, Holland - THE hippy center of Europe. Marijuana sold legally in more than 400 coffeeshops, a long history of tolerance, beautiful old city, great vibes everywhere, and yes the friendly Dutch speak English. Hippie Heaven! Lots of headshops, smartshops, rave venues, hip fashions, museums and concerts. The Vondelpark has been a gathering place for hippies since the 60s. Belgium - "I moved from Brussels to the little town of Mesnil Eglise (yes, Belgium) and see from the 75 habitants half of them are old and new tekno-hippies. From the solar energy professor to artists and bio food producers all invite friends to spend the summer in the woods of the Ardennes. This makes a lot of people smokin' and roamin' the 3 streets of the village... The melting pot with the original farmers worked well out during the last 25 years."

Prague, Czech Republic - "The capital of Czech republic is also a capital of hippie life-forms here in Czech and also for a quite a lot of them from other countries. Mary Jane is not legal, but there are a lot of small clubs, organizing the festivals, concerts, theatre and a lot of other actions, where the MJ smoke is tolerated. It has a kind of legality as by our law you can smoke it, but can not grow it, trade it etc."

The Greek Islands - European hippies flock to dozens of islands in the summer. Hot spots are Ios, Santorini, and Crete. "Other really hot places in the Greek Islands are Paros and AntiParos. The two islands are half an hour from one another. I live in Greece so I know the really cool places. There you can find a lot of Hippies, ( French, English and Greek usually...)."

Christiania, Copenhagen, Denmark - "is a free-city and the ultimate hippie haven in Europe, after Amsterdam, of course. In Kristiania you can smoke dope as much as you please and the city is very beautiful with many attractions and a lot of young people... among the hippies most popular rock band Gasolin. Helsinki, Finland - "There is a small hippie-community here too... Not a big one, but a GREAT one... As said here before, there's a lot going on in Kaisaniemi Park, but also in Koff Park, where at night you can hear the congas and really get (high) into the spirit of Helsinki. Just in the neighbourhood where I live, Kallio, there are loads of hippie parties, smoky living rooms and little peaceful parks. Of course, because of the cold winters, there's really no life after summer... but I highly recommend Finland from May to September…"

"If you want to have really psychedelic vibrations in Finland, please visit in Kaisaniemi´s Park in Helsinki. Lots of nice people, well, only in summertime, sadly. Bring your own shaman drum and enjoy... But be careful, the cops are not very friendly here."

"There is a huge hippy movement here started about 2 years ago. There are only 5 million people in Finland and 18% of the youth are on drugs, mostly ganja. I am very proud of the hippy movement here. You can spot the hippies here. If you dress like them they more than likely will offer you a joint!!"

Geneva, Switzerland - "It's a real hip city... Pot is almost legal here now, the town's full of somehow-illegal-but-tolerated places where you can sit, listen to some really cool music while rolling a nice one and have a beer for a couple of coins... Hey, it's a great place! And it ain't THAT expensive. Less than Paris! The best is in summer, at the end of July. There's a huge open air festival which really looks like a small Woodstock...Same spirit (almost) and lots and lots of friendly people who are just there for the music, the spirit and the party... It lasts for a week. It's the PALEO festival and I think you guys should get to know it!"

Spain - Spain is the European country that is closest to Morocco, with more than 1500 years of cannabis and hash smoking history. "Here are a couple of places in Spain that you NEED to visit:
Altea (in the province of Alicante)- Paradise! A beautiful little Mediterranean town where everyone's as free as he wants to get.... Don't miss "Franky`s Place", in Benidorm (just 5 miles away), a little 20 year old semi-underground bar where you can find the "relax" and good music, having a peaceful smoke.
Ibiza (Mediterranean Island, 75 N. miles out of Spanish Coast) This is THE place. Ibiza is the big party scene. Lots of young beautiful people, music, beaches, etc."

Asia
Thailand - A beautiful, friendly, tolerant country (it is full of Buddhists after all). Unfortunately economic development and unbridled tourism has deformed this country. Check out Ko Samui or Ko Phanghan for a real getaway. Stay away from Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. Chaing Mai too has changed for the worse. The hill tribes of the north are worth a visit though.

Bali, Indonesia - The beauty of this island is surpassed only by the beauty of the people and their Hindu/animistic culture. A mecca for hippies! Ubud is a great place to base. Give Kuta Beach a wide berth unless you like surfing, shopping and getting hounded.

India - A hundred lifetimes is not enough to absorb the culture, the land and the people of this amazing country. Many a seeker has found nirvana here. Goa is one of many places where hippies congregate. Other groovy places are Kerala State in the south, full of canals, Rajastan, deserts and forts, Benares if you want to get holy, the foothills of the Himalayas to get high on the mountains and charas.

The Himalayas - "There are hippies everywhere, man! Well, in India anyway. I was there from January to June and they seem to be most concentrated in the Himalayas. You can find people high on all sorts of drugs, including the awesome sight of the mountains covered in snow (it was my first time in the snow, by the way and my somewhat awkward attempts at walking up and down the slopes generated a few laughs from the stoned ones). I was told that being in India is like being stoned without having to smoke anything. It is true! If you're a real hippy you won't want to go to Goa, find your own piece of hippy heaven like I did, (unless you really MUST go to Goa!). My advice for hippies is GO NOW!"

Japan - Shimo-Kitazawa, Tokyo - "This is a great little hippy part of Tokyo, no cars, lots of nice shops and restaurants, home of Tokyo's first hemp shop and hemp restaurant, also did you know that it is legal to sell mushrooms in Japan? Just look outside the station here! Hokkaido is Japans North Island and is a nature paradise. It also has lots of wild hemp growing, some of which is quite smokable apparently. Japan Alps - during the summer it hosts lots of outdoor festivals and rave parties. These are real hippy congregations - people you don't see too often in Japan they suddenly appear. Where do they live?!"

Down Under
Australia - Many communes in the bush, some small hippie communities. Australians now spend more money on marijuana than on wine, and almost as much as BEER! How things have changed down under!

Byron Bay, Australia - The "Hippie Capital" of Australia is a place called Byron Bay (look it up!) which is situated at the top of New South Wales, near Brisbane. Byron Bay and surrounding towns like Nimbin, Mullumbimby, and Lismore are absolute havens for the alternative, new-age folk.

New Zealand - Reports of hippies here and there. Kiwis are known for their friendliness and hospitality. Hippies can be found in the Coromandel, which is a peninsula just kind of across from Auckland. In Nelson at the top of the south island there are little communities of hippies scattered about.

Waiheke Island, New Zealand - a 35 minute ferry ride from the nations largest city of Auckland. (1.1 million people). With a population of about 5000, Waiheke Island is very popular with those who want to live closer to nature.

Elsewhere
The Caribbean - The laidback island lifestyle attracts many hippies. Warm weather, beaches and life in the slow lane finds hippies in the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, St. Martin, the Grenadines, Jamaica and other tropical ports.

Bulls Bay, Jamaica..... "love--guavajelly "

Dahab, Egypt - "Dahab is a small Bedouin village located at the East Coast of the Sinai desert. Since the 70's, it's full of hippie and vagabond types. The atmosphere of the place is really nice and laidback with great music like ambient techno, reggae, 60s rock playing every where. There are several campgrounds where you can stay at rates around 1$ per night. In most restaurants you lay or sit on the floor on carpets and pillows, outdoors or indoors just by the Red Sea. There are great coral reefs a couple of meters from the shore, so many people come here for the diving. Other activities are desert excursions to oases or Mt. Sinai, wind surfing, cheap grass, desert parties, backgammon etc. Definitely a place to visit. Dahab is a very, very special place. Those who like Amsterdam should go to Dahab in winter (Christmas, New Year). Many Divers, Surfers, Trampers. Most of them smoke, even the policeman, Bedouin people and taxi drivers are stoned. The desert is great. Imagine riding on a camel and smoking good stuff. Then go in the water and enjoy the fish!"

Nile River, Egypt - "Felucca (type of boat) on the river Nile can be a most pleasant experience. They fit up to 8, so make sure you are in with the right sort. The captain rolls the joints as its tough with Egyptian papers having no gum. He cooks good chow too. And you have never EVER seen a sunset like the one from a small little boat peacefully going up the Nile. We ordered our boat from the Bob Marley Hotel run by Mohammed Bob, he's a bit of a schemer but he's got plenty of ganja."

Israel - "Many hippies live here in the Holy Land. The only westernized country where communes are part of the system."

Morocco - Once part of the hippy trail from Marrakech to the Rif Mountains, Morocco is still an interesting place to visit. Hip, laid back, places are Chefchaouen and Essaouira. Morocco is cheap and the hashish is excellent. Be aware of the local customs and act appropriately. Turkey - Perhaps the hottest destination for Europeans these days (it's cheap!). This friendly country has much to offer, including great beaches, culture, and shopping. Again, toe the line - remember the movie "Midnight Express"!

South Africa - "If you're looking for hippies South Africa has got them. Cape Town especially hosts a large hippy community, here we have the famous Green Market Square where hippies sell their creation from clothes to paintings. Every year from late June into early July thousands of people make their way to Grahmstown, a small town in the middle of nowhere, for the Grahmstown festival. Every hippy in the country winds up there sometime time during the 2-week festival. The festival is actually an arts festival where plays of all kinds (from miming to Shakespeare) can be seen, but along with the abundant actors come the hippies, hoping to make a profit off the large crowds of tourists and catch a few laughs at one of the many comedy plays. The entire town consists of two main streets and several theatre houses, what space is not being used for makeshift stages is a hippy market the size of a football field. All those who have been to one of the annual Grahmstown festivals agree on one thing; it gets better every year. As more and more people come and the hordes of hippies become uncountable the atmosphere seems to grow in a unique feeling of appreciation for the newfound peace in this unstable country. As I returned home to Cape Town after the latest festival I realized that I met more humane people from all over South Africa than I had in years of travel. It's an experience of a lifetime not to be missed."

Rustlers Valley, South Africa - "This is a place where people come together in peace and celebrate life, arts and music. There is also a permanent community there. They have recently had a disaster. The following document, written by the press crew, was presented at the 2008 New Mexico Thanksgiving Council by two wonderful elders; it received positive response. It's been slightly modified. Rainbow press crew: Goals for the Future and What’s Up

What is the Rainbow press crew?

The Rainbow press crew is a group of passionate volunteers who have committed time and energy to keeping our family safe in a new way. Its goal is to eliminate police harassment at peaceful Rainbow gatherings by getting mainstream media cameras there before the harassment and attacks occur. It is hoped that the presence of these types of cameras will deter the police from behaving inappropriately. When the next incident happens, we need the world to see it. This harassment needs to be prevented by entering reports of these attacks into the court of public opinion once and for all.

The press crew started because the tactic of increased and persistent police harassment succeeds to completely squelch events. An example is the New York Critical Mass Bike Ride. Like Rainbow, it's a recurring nonviolent event that focuses on exercising our right to peaceably assemble on public land. In 2004, upwards of 5,000 were in attendance. Then a steady police harassment campaign began which deterred people's interests in coming out, and in three years, by 2007, attendance dropped to mere dozens. Some think this may also happen to Rainbow being that we're 3/4ths down in numbers.

The press crew was launched after the tasering of Family members at gatherings followed by the FS's recent purchase of 700 Tasers ( http://www.docuticker.com/?p=18223 ) and their subsequent poor training ( http://www.fs.fed.us/im/directives/fsm/5300/5380.doc ) ( http://www.fs.fed.us/im/directives/fsh/5309.11/5309.11_50.doc ) on the use of these deadly weapons. Just last year the FS informed the Family that they would be outfitted with them at the WY Gathering.

What we do at gathering time

•On site volunteers jot down a report/summary of the day’s events, type it up and print 7 copies

•Info sends signed up after-dinner runners to pick up the copies, bring them to the road and divvy them out into cars already leaving the gathering

•Copies sent to town are called in to the voice mail of an off site volunteer that night

•Off site volunteers transform this report into a good press release and send it to media contacts

•Off site volunteers make follow up calls to media outlets (a common practice expected by the media), stressing that the most accurate story is “at the gathering” and “we can't speak for Rainbow”

•At the gathering a media check-in/parking area is established and tours of the site are offered at noon each day. Tour guides are entertaining and inform gatherers that cameras are coming into the area. These media escorts also have radios to be notified as to when to bring the cameras to an incident

We'd like the media to see all the great stuff going on at the gathering. We want them to see the beautiful children, hear the singing, smell the smells of the kitchens, and feel the good intentions.

What we did

We collected videos, documents, quotes, etc. for the press. We manifested a list of 163 media outlets (both mainstream and alternative) and a website. We set up a phone line and got a printer and driver DVDs on site. We sent out press releases and followed up with phone calls to all of the TV stations on the list. Reports came in from folks who'd left the gathering, and more press releases went out.

We were mentioned ( http://www.pinedaleroundup.com/V2_news_articles.php?heading=0&page=&story_id=719 ) in a Pinedale, WY newspaper. Dr. Niman (who wrote the book, People of the Rainbow) referenced ( http://artvoice.com/issues/v7n29/getting_a_grip ) and linked to one of our press releases in an article he wrote about the Kid Village incident which was published in Artvoice, a Buffalo, NY newspaper. And a Denver, CO cable TV program ( http://blip.tv/search?q=Rainbow+press+crew&x=0&y=0 ) called Common Sense did a show interviewing Rainbow guests that aired over a dozen times to an audience of over 60,000.

Many folks committed to volunteering with the press crew. Those who followed through did a great job, and many are back on board (we're still waiting to hear back from some) to help protect the New Mexico ('09) national from attack. Those who didn't follow through consisted of on site volunteers.

What didn't happen

At the WY Gathering last year there was no media check-in area and reports didn’t go out from the land, even though there was cell service on site behind front gate. No calls were made to the waiting, off site volunteers until bad stuff happened. By then it was too late to get the mainstream cameras in to help protect the Family. Some folks didn't take it seriously. One opinion about sending reports out before an attack was, “making daily phone calls when little is happening is useless.”

This inaction was mostly due to folks plugging in the way they usually do to ensure the survival of that particular gathering. That same 'ole, same ole' is proving detrimental to our mere existence. How are we investing so that future gatherings will still happen and will be safe two years from now?

What we need to happen

There is a parking crew, there is a water crew, and now there is a press crew. The off site crew is established. The media list keeps growing.

The Family needs on site volunteers, now more than ever, if for no other reason than to prevent the following quote from becoming a reality next month in NM. Regarding the Kid Village Incident at the WY Gathering, top LEO John Twiss said, “When you're throwing a rock at somebody's head, you're potentially looking at hurting somebody seriously or killing them. Our officers certainly could have been looking at using deadly force, but they didn't.” -Billings Gazette, July 8, 2008. ( http://www.billingsgazette.net/articles/2008/07/08/news/wyoming/31-rainbowfamily.txt ) This statement is outright spooky, but it's also a chilling example of how the FS sends lies to the press about our behavior, so it makes sense for us to send reports to the press about their behavior.

Also, a court document ( http://www.free-assembly.org/gather/courtstorms/ar07-ozark/us-v-wirtshafter/hrg-transcript-5jy07/view ) was sent to the press crew which transcribes the head of the ICT Gene Smithson who swore under oath when questioned that “Every year we are – we are going to be recertified in it (crowd control),” and added, “every officer on the team had” received re-certifying training credits in crowd control dispersal while they were at the Arkansas '07 Gathering. Therefore they probably believe that training on us is just one of their job duties so it must be totally OK to do.

Should we take it to court? Been there. Even when we win, the FS keeps doing whatever it wants. And we only have three lawyers, and they already work year round on helping the Family.

Finally, our own cameras are not enough. Last May, a Philly cop riot ( http://nyc.indymedia.org/en/2008/05/97248.shtml ) captured by TV news cameras resulted in the immediate firing of at least five officers within two weeks of the incident. That's instant accountability vs. stagnant YouTube videos and pending court cases.

The only cog left to turn this machine is finding on site volunteers who'll do their part so that the off site volunteers may provide the press with consistent, enticing, credible and professional press releases to balance out what the FS is feeding them. Be a small part of our big crew!

The officers involved in last year's Kid Village Incident probably wouldn't have opened fire if television news cameras were pointed at them first. Our own cameras certainly didn't stop them. This year, kind folks like yourself can help ensure that future gatherings will exist for our children to enjoy when they're grown and that gatherings will once again be safe.

i dont know why you have to talk so condescending <i have done nothing to you . i started with the originals in thier gatherings over 20 yrs ago , and i was at every standoff both for native rights and marijuana and i did an 8 stretch in state jail jus for getting a lot of the rainbows out of trouble in san francisco in96 , i think i deserve a little respect beside being a sundance chief an elder of the northern confederacy if this is the way you rainbows treat elders with respect than i guess we need (the native population) to remove ourselves from your groups and tribes.

i have native brothers on taos and small pueblos teat will elp camp if you need them ? why so secretive ? i feel like im back on rez and the feds are watching so nobody trust anyone .i thought trust and cosmic love was te basis for rainbow ,are there any real older rainbow elders to talk too i remember when i helped in the taos gathering about 16 or so years ago all was welcomed and all was trusted , ive noticed that me and the other 2 bloods on here have been semi -blacklisted

TeaTime NEEDS!

aight everyone,its that time of year again.the time where i usually work my ass off and save thousands of dollars to get teatime to the nationals.well this year i am unemployed.i don't have any work coming in the near future as far as i can tell.

i guess what im getting at is that teatime could really use help this year to be able to make it to the gathering in new mexico.last year there were a cpl people who chipped in to help teatime get to wyoming.myself i spent around 5grand.
